Australia and New Zealand Organ Donation Registry

About

The ANZOD Registry, established in 1989 in Australia and in 1993 in New Zealand, continues to record and report on organ donation activities across both countries. Donation after death that results in transplantation is a well-established and effective treatment, capable of restoring health and quality of life to patients with end-stage organ failure, ultimately saving lives.

Collecting data on organ donation and transplantation is essential for identifying opportunities to improve donor care, assessing the quality of transplant organs, and monitoring transplant recipient outcomes.

The Registry provides monthly reports on deceased organ donor activity and the number of recipients who benefit from transplantation. It also publishes an annual report, available for download, which presents detailed data on donation activity, organ transplantation, and how Australia and New Zealand compare with international trends in organ donation and transplantation.

ANZOD Registry Governance

The ANZOD Registry is based at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and operates under a well founded governance structure.

The ANZORRG Executive Operations Committee oversees the day-to-day operations of the ANZOD Registry. The ANZOD Working Group serves as an expert consultative body, providing advice on current and future directions for reporting on organ, eye, and tissue donation in Australia and New Zealand, and supporting key Registry activities.

ANZOD is funded by the Organ and Tissue Authority (Australia) and Health New Zealand.

Key contributing stakeholders include the Transplantation Society of Australia and New Zealand, state and territory DonateLife agencies, OrganMatch and Organ Donation New Zealand.

ANZOD Working Group

The ANZOD Working Group serves as an expert advisory body, guiding the current and future direction of organ, eye, and tissue donation reporting for the Australian and New Zealand Organ Donation Registry. Its functions include reviewing and updating annual and monthly ANZOD reports, generating and supporting research through data analysis, publications, and presentations, and assessing data requests. The group also responds to research queries and proposals from external contributors, facilitates appropriate projects, advises on data collection priorities within available systems, and considers sector-relevant issues. Through these activities, the Working Group aims to maximise opportunities for information sharing and deliver high-quality reporting outputs to benefit the donation, transplantation, and intensive care communities across Australia and New Zealand.

Australian Waiting List Dashboard

This dashboard provides a snapshot of the number of organs required for transplantation in Australia, categorised by organ type. These figures differ from the number of patients on the waiting list, as some individuals may be waiting for more than one organ. The data show how many organs could be transplanted immediately if suitable organs were available at the time of reporting. View the interactive dashboard below.
