Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry
About
The Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant (ANZDATA) Registry is a clinical quality registry dedicated to collecting, analysing, and reporting data on kidney replacement therapy (KRT) across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Established in 1977, ANZDATA has been instrumental in enhancing patient care, informing clinical practices, and guiding health policy decisions related to kidney failure.
ANZDATA collects detailed information on the incidence, prevalence, and outcomes of dialysis and transplant treatments. All renal units across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand contribute to the Registry, ensuring a representative dataset that supports continuous quality improvement in renal care.
With a long history of continuous operation, ANZDATA is the flagship Registry of the Australia and New Zealand Organ Replacement Therapies Registry Group (ANZORRG), distinguished by its comprehensive data collection and significant contribution to clinical practice and research.
ANZDATA Registry Governance
The ANZDATA Registry is based at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and operates under a robust, multi-layered governance structure.
Ongoing oversight is provided by the Executive Committee, ensuring effective coordination and continuity. Strategic direction and high-level guidance are delivered by the ANZDATA Advisory Committee. A number of specialised Working Groups contribute expert input through the Advisory Committee to support key Registry activities.
ANZDATA is funded by the Organ and Tissue Authority (Australia), Health New Zealand, and receives targeted support from the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology for the Epidemiology Fellow position.
Key contributing stakeholders include Kidney Health Australia, the Transplant Society of Australia and New Zealand, and the Renal Society of Australasia.
ANZDATA Executive Committee
The ANZDATA Executive Committee is responsible for the regular oversight and operational management of the Registry. Its role includes ensuring effective coordination, implementation of strategic priorities, and maintaining the overall performance of ANZDATA.
The Committee is comprised of the Director of Strategy and Policy, Technical Director, Director of Projects and Analytics, Registry General Manager, Chair and Deputy Chair of the ANZDATA Advisory Committee, Chair of the Quality and Safety Committee, and the Epidemiology Fellow.
The Executive Committee operates under the strategic direction of the ANZDATA Advisory Committee and collaborates closely with specialised Working Groups to ensure the Registry remains clinically relevant, data-driven, and responsive to stakeholder needs.

ANZDATA Advisory Committee
The ANZDATA Advisory Committee provides advice and guidance to the Executive Committee about activities of the Registry. It has a particular focus on clinical matters and relationships with clinical stakeholders, including a close relationship with the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology (ANZSN). In addition, the committee provides input on the structure and membership of ANZDATA’s working groups and helps maintain strong relationships with clinical stakeholders and data contributors.
Learn more about the ANZDATA Advisory CommitteeANZDATA Working Groups
ANZDATA Working Groups play a critical role in the ongoing development, analysis, and dissemination of registry data. Each Working Group is responsible for the annual review of data captured through the ANZDATA survey in its specific area, and for supporting research and knowledge generation related to kidney health. They contribute directly to ANZDATA’s annual reporting by preparing relevant chapters and presenting key findings at professional society meetings. The ANZDATA Working Groups foster collaborative research by generating ideas for analysis and publication, reviewing external research proposals, and facilitating projects from conception to presentation.
Working Group Members are actively involved in shaping the direction of ANZDATA data collection and research within their field. Members participate in regular meetings (4) year, contribute to research outputs, and help maintain the quality and relevance of ANZDATA data. In return, members gain opportunities for national collaboration, authorship, and leadership within the renal research community.
Each Working Group Chair reports the working group activities through the Advisory Committee. The working groups operate under formal Terms of Reference.
ANZDATA Contributors
All renal units within Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand contribute data to the ANZDATA Registry. These units provide the clinical data that make the Registry possible, and we are grateful for their ongoing partnership and contributions. Find the full list on contributing units below.
ANZDATA Partners
The ANZDATA Registry is supported by a long-standing network of partners across government, clinical, academic, and community sectors. Core funding is provided by the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care through the Australian Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplant Authority, and by the New Zealand Ministry of Health.
ANZDATA works closely with the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology (ANZSN) across several initiatives, including the ANZDATA/ANZSN Epidemiology Fellowship and the jointly delivered Trainee Research and Practice Program (ATRPP). These programs support research training, enhance analytical capability, and contribute to quality improvement, aligning with ANZSN’s strategic pillars of research, education, and advocacy.
Collaboration with the broader kidney health, dialysis, and transplantation sector is central to ANZDATA’s work, with stakeholders providing crucial partnerships to support the operation, development, and relevance of the ANZDATA Registry. The Registry maintains strong partnerships with SAHMRI, the National Indigenous Kidney Transplantation Taskforce (NIKTT), Kidney Health Australia (KHA), the Renal Society of Australasia (RSA), the Transplantation Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ), Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, OrganMatch, and the New Zealand Blood Service. These partnerships contribute significantly to data quality, research translation, policy development, and service improvement across the kidney care sector. The collective efforts and shared expertise of these organisations are critical to the Registry’s effectiveness, impact, and its ability to inform clinical practice.
ANZDATA receives support from industry contributors such as Vantive (Baxter) and through research funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
